In 1864, Union forces were pressing the Confederacy from many directions. Mississippi was now in Union hands, Sherman was marching to the sea, Grant was advancing toward Richmond, Butler left Fort Monroe to get between Richmond and Petersburg, and Sigel and Crook were active in the Shenandoah Valley.
Union General Franz Sigel had fought in Prussia and was popular with German-American troops. Grant sent him from Martinsburg southward to secure Staunton in the Shenandoah Valley. He only got as far as New Market, which is north of Harrisonburg.
