June 5-6, 1864: At Piedmont in the Shenandoah Valley, U.S. Major General David Hunter defeated William E. "Grumble" Jones, who was killed in the battle. Hunter went on to occupy Staunton and Lexington, only to be forced to retreat into West Virginia after an unsuccessful attempt to seize Lynchburg June 17-18.
